GCRF Scaling up Off-grid Sanitation (SOS)

Prof Anna Mdee and Dr Alesia Ofori  are working with Cranfield and Bangor Universities in the UK,  alongside local universities and project partners operating container-based sanitation enterprises (CBS) in Haiti, Kenya, Peru and South Africa.  A £1.7 million UKRI-GCRF project funded as part of the (Re) Thinking the Off-Grid City call runs up to April 2023.

The project aims to critically examine the potential CBS has for addressing sanitation, particularly in urban areas featuring off-grid options for sanitation and hard-to-reach informal settlements.

Leeds offers expertise on the political economy of public services to understand processes of power, politics, institutions and governance working in conjunction with Dr Fiona Anciano at the University of Western Cape, South Africa. We also supervise the implementation of innovative participatory methods to investigate dynamics of inclusion and exclusion and how CBS relates to other aspects of the sanitation system working closely with Dr Dani Barrington at the University of Western Australia.
