The State in Africa

Alex Beresford's research examines the changing relationships between labour, capital and the state in contemporary South Africa. South Africa's powerful trade unions are playing a central role within the country's current political upheavals. The results of these ongoing struggles has profound significance for the country's future, as well as for how we understand the role of labour movements in struggles for social justice in the twenty-first century.

Alex Beresford and Ray Bush also edited special issue collections on the topic of industrial restructuring and changing patterns of class politics in Africa for both Review of African Political Economy and Critical African Studies.
