Please join us for this RiDNet brownbag career development workshop on 'Career Opportunities with Research (beyond academia)'. We will host Ruth Winden - a career professional working with Organisational Development & Professional Learning (OD&PL) at Leeds. Ruth specialises in career development, aiming to help researchers manage their careers strategically, with skill and confidence, across all employment sectors - from academia, industry, not-for-profits to start-ups and portfolio careers. We will also be joined by Dr Lisa Thorley, Lecturer in Gender and International Development at POLIS. Prior to joining POLIS, Lisa worked as an evaluator in the Gender department of an international development consultancy, and has also worked for the think tank Overseas Development Institute (ODI).

This event is structured to help PGRs who are considering careers in research but outside of academia. Ruth will begin by giving an overview on transitioning out of academia & how to position yourself in the job market and in applications. This will be followed by a case study by Lisa who will talk through her experience working in think tanks/consultancies, and the transferable skills from her PhD. This will be followed by a Q&A session, so please do come with questions, or pre-submit questions and comments in the registration form below.

Please note: this event will take place face to face in EC Stoner 9.90. The event will include some breakout sessions, brainstorming exercises and participation, so F2F is the preferred option, and please do attend in person if possible. However, for those not in Leeds, there will also be chance to attend the session online via Teams. Ruth Smith will be monitoring the online attendees and will field any comments and questions submitted online.
Please complete the registration form if you would like to attend.
